Footage tips for clean green screen edges

The cleaner the separation between subject and background in your original clip, the cleaner the green-screen result. A few filming habits make a big difference to hair, hands and fast movement.

Process your footage

In short

Light the subject evenly and avoid strong backlight.
Choose a background that contrasts with hair and clothing.
Keep motion moderate; motion blur blurs the edge too.
Leave space around the subject in the frame.

Before you film

Face a window or a soft light; avoid bright windows behind you.
Avoid clothing that matches the background colour.
Tie back very fine flyaway hair if edges matter.
Keep the camera steady.
